The majority of
people come to see me as a result of back and neck pain. Generally they
will have seen their GP and often a physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor,
and yet they find the discomfort returning. This is very often due to
the way that they are using themselves. Standing or sitting in an uncoordinated
way: working at a computer for instance
and pulling the spine out of shape.
The
discomfort may have started as a result of an accident such as whiplash
or a slipped disc. These can heal but the way that we then use the back
and also how we react to the pain itself will either encourage or hinder
this healing. Unnecessary tension in the muscles may be felt as pain
and puts pressure on the spine and discs which leads to further
problems, such as sciatica.
When
we learn to use the body in an easy balanced way and react without the
habitual tensing we find the symptoms tend to disappear and any further
injury is prevented. With this then comes a greater feeling of control
and responsibility for ones' own well-being.
"Doing
the Alexander Technique I feel more grounded and in control. And the
back pain is certainly improving."
